This course was created in response to parent and teen feedback for career/college/life skills development, more social time, more activities strictly initiated by youths and more advanced academic content. In order to meet these criteria, this program will run form 9:15am- 4:00pm.
This program offers an extended day to older teens, including time for extended study, skill development, guest speakers and lectures, youthdirected projects and occasional trips to other sites in the community. The morning segment (9:15-12:00) will focus on knowledge and skill development that is immediately applicable to life. Explorations in areas such as finances, politics, internships and work opportunities, and written and spoken communication skills can support the goals of individuals. In addition, the group will be supported in pooling its resources in order to organize business ventures, service projects, and other cooperative endeavors. Guest speakers and workshops on related topics will be included.
During the middle portion of the day (12:00 - 2:00) youth are invited to initiate individual and group projects and activities. This is an ideal time to have a book club, organize music improv sessions, create a movie, work in the art space, or mentor or learn directly from other youth in countless areas. Activities are youth-directed and facilitated by Mike and Diane, in the truest sense of that word.
In the afternoon (2:00 - 4:00), youth will choose from a variety of topics to study in depth. The goal is to offer more advanced academic content in meaningful contexts. The segments will vary in length and further study/development beyond program time will be encouraged. At times topics will revolve around a particular theme (e.g. concept, time period, place) in order to make connections between disciplines. Young people and facilitators will work together to create the list of available topics.
